Man arrested in Limerick after incident at house

Armed gardaí attended the scene and an intervention took place two hours later

A man was arrested following an incident at a domestic residence in Co Limerick on Tuesday night.

At approximately 6.45pm on Tuesday evening, gardaí­ received a call to an incident on Main Street, Abbeyfeale.

A male in his 30s had barricaded himself into a private house with access to weapons such as domestic knives and tools, according to gardaí. There were no firearms present.

Local uniformed gardaí­ and plain clothes gardaí­ attended the scene, while An Garda Síochána implemented its operational command protocol.

An on-scene commander was appointed and local garda negotiators from Limerick, attached to the national negotiators unit attended the scene supported by armed support units from Limerick and Cork.

At approximately 10pm, an intervention was put in place by the armed support unit and the man was arrested for offences contrary to the Criminal Damage Act 1991.

He was medically assessed at the scene and was taken to Henry Street Garda station, Limerick, where he was detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

Gardaí continue to investigate all the circumstances in relation to the build-up to the incident and the incident itself.

The scene of the domestic house was preserved but traffic restrictions that had been put in place in the Abbeyfeale area were lifted.
