Man arrested in Kildare following €100,000 cannabis herb seizure

Drugs found during search of stolen van in Allenwood earlier this month

Gardaí have arrested a man in Kildare following the seizure of €100,000 worth of cannabis herb in a stolen van earlier this month.

A man in his 30s was arrested by gardaí on Monday and is currently detained at Naas Garda Station under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996. He may he held for up to seven days.

The cannabis herb was found during a search of a stolen van in Allenwood, Co Kildare on the 9th October.

The drugs seized were sent for analysis to Forensic Science Ireland - formerly known as the Forensic Science Laboratory - and the van was technically examined by local officers.

The man being questioned was arrested as part of a follow-up operation on Monday.

The Garda Press Office said the investigation is ongoing and further updates will follow.

The drugs were seized under Operation Tara, the Garda's national anti-drugs strategy .

The Garda says focus of the operation is to disrupt, dismantle and prosecute drug trafficking network , at all levels involved in the importation, distribution, cultivation, production, local sale and supply of controlled drugs.

Under this initiative, individuals and groups involved in the drug trade will be the target of enforcement activity based on intelligence and the latest crime trends.
