Man arrested after teenage girl attacked during afternoon walk in Fermoy

Gardaí appealing for witnesses to assault that happened close to town centre

A man has been arrested after a teenage girl was assaulted in Fermoy shortly after 1pm on Monday.

The teenager was approached and assaulted by two men as she was out walking alone on Monday afternoon. A number of other young people intervened when they heard the young woman screaming. The assailants fled the scene by foot.

One of the teenagers who went to the assistance of the girl sustained a minor injury in the scuffle. He required stitches in hospital.

The girl, who lives locally, did not sustain serious injuries in the incident. However, she was left badly shaken by the assault.

The man, understood to be in his late 20s or early 30s, was detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Fermoy Garda station.

The incident occurred a short distance from the town centre and CCTV was being examined by gardaí investigating the crime.
