A 68-year-old man has been killed in a car crash in Co Monaghan.

The collision occurred at about 6.30pm on Tuesday at Aghalisk on the Monaghan to Clones (N54) Road about two miles outside Monaghan town.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and his remains were removed to the morgue in Monaghan.

The other driver, a 58-year-old woman, was treated for minor injuries at Cavan General Hospital. Neither vehicle was carrying passengers.

Gardaí closed the road for forensic examination and diversions have been put in place. It is expected to remain closed until Wednesday afternoon at least.

An appeal has been made for witnesses or anyone with information to contact Monaghan Garda station at (047) 77200, the Garda confidential line on 1800 666 111 or any other station.
