A 63-year-old man has been remanded in custody after he was charged with the murder of a father-of-three who was stabbed outside a chip shop in Dublin on Sunday night.
The defendant, Donal Colgan, from Killarney Street, in central Dublin, was remanded in custody with a judge ordering that he was to get medical attention.
David ‘Gummy’ Sheridan (45), from the north inner city, received multiple wounds at 10.45pm on Sunday. He had been in a fast food outlet near the Five Lamps when he became involved in a row.
First aid was administered at the scene before he was rushed to the Mater Hospital where he underwent surgery. However, he was pronounced dead at the hospital at about 11.20am on Monday.
A forensic examination was carried out at the scene by members of the Garda Technical Bureau and yesterday morning the 63-year-old man was also arrested. He was brought to Mountjoy Garda station where he was detained under the provisions of section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.
This evening Mr Colgan was brought before Dublin District Court charged with the murder of Mr Sheridan.
Detective Sergeant Mark Watters of Mountjoy Garda station told Judge Deirdre Gearty that the accused had been arrested this afternoon for the purpose of charge.
Det Sgt Watters said the defendant had “no reply” after he was cautioned and the charge was put to him.
Dressed in a light grey tracksuit top, black T-shirt and dark grey tracksuit bottoms, Mr Colgan spoke briefly during the hearing saying “yes” and nodding to the Judge who had asked him to confirm his name.
He stood when he addressed the court but sat silently for the rest of the short hearing. There has been no indication as to how he intends to plead and a book of evidence has to be prepared before he can be returned for trial.
Due to the nature of the charge he must go to the High Court to apply for bail.
Judge Gearty remanded him in custody to appear at Cloverhill District Court on August 26th next.
Defence solicitor Noelle Kenny asked for an order that her client would received medical attention during his remand in custody and the judge agreed to make that order.
Judge Gearty also granted legal aid after being informed that that the accused earned €550 gross a week and his weekly rent was €91.
