Gardaí make arrest after incident in Olympic silver medalist’s home town

A man is in custody following an incident in Mullingar last night in which Olympic boxer John Joe Nevin sustained a broken leg.

Gardaí were called to the Ardleigh area of the town shortly after 11.30am, following reports of an incident in which the 24-year-old suffered leg injuries.

The Olympic silver medalist was removed to the Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar for treatment after the incident, details of which are unclear.

Gardaí said a dispute involving a number of individuals outside a house at Ardleigh Crescent had been reported. Two men in their 20s and a woman in her twenties were admitted to hospital.

A man in his 20s was later arrested and is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at Mullingar Garda station.

Just last month the boxer made his debut as a professional in Boston when he beat Puerto Rico’s Alberto Candelaria over six rounds on St Patrick’s Day.
