Child law clinic opens in Cork university

A new child law clinic was launched last Thursday at the faculty of law, University College Cork, by Marsha Levick, deputy director and chief counsel of Philadelphia's Juvenile Law Centre.

The clinic, whose director is Dr Ursula Kilkelly, is supported by the National Academy for Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning. It aims to support lawyers in litigating children’s issues while providing students with practical experience of child law and litigation and advancing evidence-based reform in all areas of child law.

Irish human rights record scrutinised

Ireland's human rights record will be examined for the first time next October under a new UN process called the universal periodic review (UPR).

Human rights commissions and NGOs contribute to this examination. The Irish Human Rights Commission (IHRC) is encouraging the public and civil society groups to have their say on our record by addressing correspondence detailing their concerns to upr@ihrc.ie. This will help inform the IHRC report on Ireland's record.

Flac meeting on access to justice

The Free Legal Aid Centre (Flac) at NUI Galway holds its inaugural law day on Equal Access to Justice in the McMunn Theatre, Art/Science building, at 7pm tonight.

It will be addressed by Mrs Justice Catherine McGuinness, president of the Law Reform Commission; Dr Lydia Foy who challenged the failure of the Irish government to provide for transsexuals; Noeline Blackwell, director-general of Flac; and Larry Donnelly, manager of the Public Interest Law Alliance.

New law degree in Maynooth

NUI Maynooth has launched a new four-year LLB full-time programme that will run from next September, with a particular focus on commercial law and litigation, advocacy and legal writing.

Seminar

A breakfast seminar hosted by Beauchamps Solicitors and FGS Tax Consultants takes place on January 25th, and will
discuss protection, exploitation and tax aspects of intellectual property.
