Garda who was paralysed in crash on duty dies

Funeral of Colm Cullen who passed away aged 61 to take place in Mount Argus, Dublin

The funeral will take place on Monday of Garda Colm Cullen who continued to serve in the force after he was paralysed in a road traffic collision.

Mr Cullen, who died aged 61 last Thursday, was paralysed when his Garda motorcycle was in a collision near Roscrea, Co Tipperary. He was making his way to the Garda College in Templemore when he struck a car doing a U-turn.

He continued to work with the Garda traffic corps until his recent retirement.

Following his injury he had campaigned on road safety and travelled around the country to promote it.

His was only the second person in the force’s history to have been paralysed on duty.

His funeral will take place at St Paul of the Cross church in Mount Argus, Dublin.
