Gardaí today seized cannabis herb and resin worth an estimated €1.4 million in Co Carlow.

The seizure was a result of a joint investigation involving the Garda National Drugs Unit, the Garda Organised Crime Unit and gardaí attached to the Carlow District, and Revenue’s Customs drug enforcement officers.

The investigation led to the search of a vehicle in the Carlow area during the afternoon. During the course of the search, the drugs were recovered.

A man in his 40s was arrested at the scene and was detained at Carlow Garda station.

Separately, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) arrested three men on suspicion of drugs offences.

The arrests were made by officers investigating the sudden deaths of two people within hours in the same town in Co Fermanagh.

Care worker Olivia Reilly (29) died at a house in Lisnaskea on Sunday night. The next morning, unemployed Noel Reilly (36) - who was not related to Ms Reilly - was found dead in his house around a mile away.

The causes of the deaths have not been confirmed, but police are investigating a potential link.

Officers detained the men, one aged 32 and two aged 28, in Lisnaskea earlier on suspicion of possession of Class A controlled drugs and supply of Class A controlled drugs.

The arrests followed a large number of searches in the town.

A PSNI spokeswoman said investigations into the deaths were continuing.
