Woman sues over alleged injury sustained opening wine bottle

A woman is suing an off-licence and a wine producer over allegedly suffering a cut to her thumb when trying to open a bottle of wine, the High Court has heard.

Jean Jones, from Monkstown, Cork, claims the bottle of JP Chenet wine she was holding shattered as another person tried to dislodge a crumbled cork, in a room at the Ross Hotel, Killarney, on September 30th, 2011.

She claims she suffered a laceration to her thumb and later underwent surgery for repair of nerves and tendons.

She is suing wine producers, Les Grands Chais de France, of Petersbach, France, and Donagh Gleeson and Sons, trading as Gleeson's Spar, College Street, Killarney, claiming they negligently supplied an allegedly defective product. The claims are denied. The case was before the president of the High Court, Mr Justice Nicholas Kearns, because of a dispute between the parties concerning disclosure by Ms Jones in advance of the hearing. The judge ordered that she provide details in relation to how the accident occurred. MARY CAROLAN
