HSE orders new report into death of baby at Cavan General Hospital

The Health Service Executive (HSE) has said it is in the process of commissioning a new review into the death of a baby boy at Cavan General Hospital in 2012.

Jamie Flynn was born in the hospital in November 2012 but died two days later after being transferred to the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin.

The HSE compiled a report into his death but this was quashed by the High Court last September on foot of proceedings taken by the obstetrician in the case, Dr Salah Abel-Aziz Ahmed. Dr Aziz had previously been granted an order restraining publication of the report.

The HSE told the court at the time it would direct a new inquiry by a different legal team.

The HSE said yesterday two other “incidents” involving the deaths of newborn babies at the hospital were being reviewed by external independent review teams in accordance with policy.
