Boy settles action over birth for €2.15m

A young boy who sued the Coombe hospital in Dublin over the circumstances of his birth has settled his action for €2.15 million.

Calum Taaffe has severe neurological and cognitive problems and has been diagnosed with autism, the High Court heard.

Calum (7), of St Ronan's Close, Clondalkin, Dublin, had, through his mother, Dionne Murphy, sued the Coombe Hospital arising from the circumstances of his birth on December 26th, 2007.

It was claimed there was a failure to properly monitor the baby and his mother during labour and to properly monitor and assess the CTG trace.

The claims were denied.

Bruce Antoniotti SC, for the child, told the court Calum was “flat” at delivery and in poor condition.

Approving the settlement, Mr Justice Kevin Cross said it was a very good one.
