High Court approves new bail terms for Kevin McGeever

Former millionaire charged with wasting Garda time could not meet original cash requirements

The High Court has approved fresh bail terms for Kevin McGeever, the former millionaire developer charged with wasting Garda time.

Mr McGeever is charged under sections 12 (a) and 12 (b) of the Criminal Law Act 1976, relating to wasting Garda time between January 29th and February 28th this year.

He was remanded in custody at Harristown District Court late last month after he failed to come up with money for bail.

Bail had been set at his own bond of €2,500 and independent surety of €10,000, with a minimum of €3,000 of that to be cash. His lawyers sought to have the original terms of his bail amended because he was not in a position to come up with the cash.

However, District Court Judge Geoffrey Browne said Mr McGeever had to go to the High Court if he wanted the terms of his bail altered.

The application to amend his bail was due to be heard by the High Court earlier this week, but was adjourned to today’s sitting of the court when lawyers for Mr McKeever and the DPP told Mr Justice Paul McDermott new bail terms had been agreed.

The terms include he reside at an address at Brooklawn, Clontarf, Dublin 3, sign on three times a week with the Gardai, surrender his travel documents, and on his own bond of €10,000.

Mr McGeever was not present when the matter was mentioned was heard.

Mr Justice McDermott remanded Mr McGeever in custody with consent to bail to a sitting at Harristown District Court tomorrow.

Mr McGeever (68), Nirvana, Ballywinna, Craughwell, Co Galway was charged following a Garda investigation launched in January this year after he was found on a roadside in Co Leitrim.

He had been reported missing in May 2012 and was found by a passerby. Gardaí began an investigation into an allegation of false imprisonment.

Mr McGeever was subsequently arrested, questioned by the Gardai resulting in a number of charges being brought against him.
