Fionn Braidwood accused of fatally stabbing his mother in her Dún Laoghaire home

A man has appeared in court in Dún Laoghaire charged with the murder of his mother at her home.

Fionn Braidwood (30) of Clarinda Park East was charged with the murder of Jane Braidwood (65) at the same address.

At Dún Laoghaire District Court on Thursday, Sgt Don Griffin gave evidence of arresting Mr Braidwood for murder. The accused made no reply when cautioned, Sgt Griffin said.

He said Mr Braidwood was formally charged with murder at 6pm on January 21st. The court heard the accused replied “no” to the charge.

Jane Braidwood was fatally stabbed on Tuesday, she was brought by ambulance to St Vincent’s hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Judge Anne Watkin agreed to remand the accused in custody to appear before Cloverhill District Court on January 29th.

Mr Braidwood, who is in receipt of social welfare, was granted free legal aid.

His solicitor said this was a “difficult time” for Mr Braidwood and requested he undergo a psychiatric assessment.

Judge Watkin granted the psychiatric assessment on general medical grounds as well as fitness to stand trial.
