Man charged with possession of over 700 rounds of ammunition

John Costello brought before Special Criminal Court and remanded in custody

A man has been brought before an out-of-hours sitting of the Special Criminal Court on Wednesday night charged with the possession of more than 700 rounds of ammunition.

John Costello (59), of Glenashrone, Abbeyfeale, Co Limerick, was arrested in Abbeyfeale on Wednesday.

Mr Costello is charged with the possession of 450 rounds of .38 special calibre ammunition and 329 rounds of 9mm calibre ammunition at Main Street, Abbeyfeale on February 21st last.

He is also charged with the possession of three rounds of 9mm calibre ammunition at his home address on February 22.

Arrest

Det Garda Michael Herlihy told solicitor for the Director of Public Prosecutions Liam Mulholland that he arrested Mr Costello.

Det Gda Herlihy said Mr Costello made no reply and he then brought him to Newcastlewest Garda station in Limerick.

The court heard that Mr Costello was then taken to the Special Criminal Court where he was given a copy of the charge sheet which was then explained to him.

Counsel for Mr Costello Dean Kelly agreed with Mr Mulholland that the matter be listed for mention and possibly a bail order application on March 1st at 11am.

Presiding judge Mr Justice Paul Butler, sitting with Judge Flann Brennan and Judge William Hamill, remanded Mr Costello in custody until Tuesday morning.
