Former Anglo official Tiarnan O’Mahoney to have appeal in January

A date in January has been set for an appeal by former Anglo Irish Bank official, Tiarnan O'Mahoney, against his conviction for hiding accounts in July this year.

O'Mahoney (56) of Glen Pines, Enniskerry, Co Wicklow, was convicted of furnishing incorrect information to the Revenue Commissioners in 2003. He was also convicted of conspiring to falsify bank records and conspiring to defraud Revenue. Judge Patrick McCartan, at the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, sentenced him to three years in prison.

The former chief operations officer at Anglo is serving his time at Loughan House, a low-security prison in Co Cavan.

An application for bail pending appeal, due to be made on Friday morning, was adjourned.

Brendan Grehan SC, for Daly, said following the bail application of co-convicted Bernard Daly earlier this week, which was rejected by the Court of Appeal, it was decided it was better to wait until court transcripts from the eight-week trial became available.

He sought liberty to re-enter the case, once transcripts are available. And he asked for his client’s appeal to be heard on the same date as Daly’s, January 11th.

Mr Justice George Birmingham agreed and asked for submissions for the court before that date. The appeals have been set down for three days. Both men will also appeal their sentences.

Separately, a date was set for the third former Anglo official jailed in July, Aoife Maguire, to appeal her sentence. She has not sought to appeal her conviction.

Maguire, (63) of Rothe Abbey, South Circular Road, Kilmainham, Dublin, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for conspiring to falsify company records and conspiring to defraud Revenue. The former assistant manager is serving her time at the Dochas Centre, a women’s prison on the Mountjoy Prison Campus in Dublin.

Her appeal was set for December 21st.
