Boys plead guilty to detention centre breakout in July

Two 16-year-olds among group of four escapees from Oberstown

Two 16-year-old boys have pleaded guilty to escaping from custody after they were involved in a breakout at a Dublin detention centre in July.

Four teenagers absconded from the Oberstown youth detention facility in Lusk on July 25th. Three were recaptured within days.

Two of the teens were brought before the Dublin Children’s Court on Wednesday charged under Section 215 of the Children Act which can result in three-month custodial sentences, consecutive to their current terms.

Defence solicitor Michelle Finan told Judge John O'Connor both boys were entering guilty pleas.

The judge adjourned the case until next week for their parents to attend their hearings. A pre-sentence probation report has also been sought.

Ms Finan said that one of the boys is due to be released from his sentence in October.

Garda Sergeant Anthony Tighe said the neither boy had any reply when the charges were put to them. The court heard that one of the escapees remains at large.

Another boy, aged 15, was charged last month over the July 25th escape but has not yet entered a plea.
