Co Fermanagh woman murdered in Athens named

A Co Fermanagh woman who was found murdered in Athens has been named locally as 48-year-old Lorna Boyle.

The body of Ms Boyle was discovered in an apartment in the neighbourhood of Ambelokipi last weekend. It is believed she had been murdered one month prior to the discovery.

Greek police have arrested a 52-year-old man in connection with the killing.

Sinn Féin this afternoon appealed for privacy on behalf of Ms Boyle’s family.

In a statement, Brian McCaffrey, a party councillor from Roslea, Co Fermanagh, said her sudden and unexpected death is "obviously a sad and traumatic event for her family".

Her family are liaising with the Irish Embassy in Athens, he added.

“They wish to express their gratitude to the Embassy staff and the staff at the Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin for their continuing assistance.

“The exact circumstances of Lorna Boyle’s death are the subject of an ongoing investigation by the Athens police. It is understood that a 52-year-old Greek national is currently being held by them on suspicion of murder.

“The Boyle family have appealed for privacy”.

Meanwhile a Belfast man who drowned while on holiday in Malta on Thursday has been named.

He was Peter Cassidy (65) and a father of three from Ava Crescent in the south of the city.

He is reported to have got into difficulty while swimming in the Golden Bay area in the north west of the island.

He was airlifted to hospital by an army helicopter, but was pronounced dead on arrival.
