Two partially-exploded bombs have been found close to a British army base in Derry.
The PSNI said the improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were left in two duffle-type bags placed near the fence of the Territorial Army facility.
A number of homes in the area of Rockport Park and Caw Park were evacuated following the discovery of the two devices.
An examination of CCTV footage indicated that the bombs left in Rockport Park “partially initiated” at about 11.35pm on Saturday but “failed to fully explode”.
No warning was given.
The PSNI are investigating whether dissident Republicans were involved in the attempted bombing.
PSNI chief inspector Tony Callaghan described the incident as a "truly reckless act which endangered local people's lives".
“These devices had the capacity to kill or maim,” he said.
The IEDs which were contained within the two bags have now been taken away for forensic examination.
