The Taoiseach Brian Cowen has welcomed the decision of the Green Party's special convention to back the Programme for Government.

In a statement issued tonight, he described the programme as "vibrant, pragmatic and comprehensive" and expressed the hope that it would serve the country well in the years to come.

He said the "exhaustive review" had been "a positive experience for both parties".

"The Government partners have a good relationship based on trust, pragmatism and a shared desire to do what is best for the country in economic, social and environmental terms. This Programme reflects this," Mr Cowen said.

He said the revised Programme would ensure Ireland would be "a smart, green, high value export lead economy, which is directed by an efficient and citizen lead public service".

Mr Cowen is to present it next week to the Fianna Fail Parliamentary Party for consideration.
