Victoria - A divorced Canadian woman hoping to take her son on a drive to the United States had to swear before a judge that she would not smoke in the car, according to newspaper accounts yesterday.

The boy lives with his mother, Ms Elizabeth Howse (27), in British Columbia, but she may not take him out of Canada without his father's permission. The father, a 28 year-old truck driver, said his son Dustin would be harmed by second-hand smoke inhalation during the long car ride to Arizona with Howse and her boyfriend.
