Councils to restrict water supply at night

FINGAL/DÚN LAOGHAIRE:NIGHT WATER supply will continue to be restricted in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown and Fingal in the coming week, and some areas will also experience daytime disruption, the councils have said.

Leaks, burst mains and a strain on reservoir supplies caused by the recent weather have meant poor or no water for homes in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council and Fingal County Council areas in the past week.

And although supply has improved for many homes, some areas in both local authorities continue to suffer.

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council said yesterday its water situation appeared to be stabilising. Some progress had been made in the Killiney and Ballinclea areas, as well as in the Gallops area of Sandyford, but supply could take some time to work its way through the system.

It said specific roads were still without water, and tankers were in operation in Dalkey and Killiney.

“Restrictions on supply will, however, continue to be applied until such time as the network is fully restored.”

Where possible the council has given information on interruption to supply on its website. However, when water pressure is reduced what manifests as low water pressure in one area may mean no water in another. This makes it difficult to say how each home will be affected.

Fingal County Council said water pressure would be reduced in all areas in the coming days from 10pm to 6am to allow reservoirs to fill. Areas still experiencing problems with supply during the day include Lanesborough, Mayestown and Melville, St Margaret’s, the Naul, Garristown and high areas of Howth.

“Continuing water conservation in the coming days is the key to allowing our reservoirs to refill and to restore a water supply across Fingal,” the council said.

Local Labour Party councillor Tom Kelleher said reservoirs would take quite a while to get back to a comfortable level and the council was likely to be cutting back on water at night for weeks.
