Councils extend boil water notices

Cork and Galway county councils have issued boil water notices for public water supply in certain areas.

In Cork the council advised that all mains supplies in areas north of the River Lee/North Channel - including areas outside the city boundary - should be boiled before use.

The notice will remain as a precautionary measure as the supply of piped water returns on a phased basis.

In the west, efforts continued to pump out flooded houses, re-open roads and deal with a serious contamination of water supplies in the mid-Galway region.

Some 235 km of mains is affected by the boil water notice, issued yesterday by Galway County Council for the mid-Galway region. A boil water notice is also still in place in Ballinasloe and is likely to remain so for the next eight weeks.

The N18 Galway to Limerick road, which was seriously affected by flooding over the past ten days, has re-opened at Kiltartan.

However, there are local diversions in place at Labane close to Ardrahan, where high levels in turloughs are affecting homes, farms and minor routes in south Galway.

The N 65 route to Portumna and the Tipperary border has also opened, but a single lane is in place for part of the route.

Roads are still closed between Galway and Monivea (R339), and between Galway and Roscommon (N63), where the route is still closed between Horseleap Cross and Moylough.

The ESB has described the situation on the Shannon as "stable", with levels dropping for the third day in a row on Lough Derg. However, efforts are still continuing to keep the river at bay in Clonfert and Meelick, while a number of homes between Ardrahan and Kinvara were evacuated due to a combination of flooded tributaries and turloughs.
