HIGH winds and heavy rain caused problems for motorists in several Munster counties yesterday. There were snowfalls on high ground.
But Cork city, which often suffers severe flooding, was spared, although considerable amounts of rain fell during the day with some turning to sleet as temperatures dropped.
The President, Mrs Robinson, had to cancel a number of engagements in Cork yesterday when her helicopter could not take off from Dublin. As a result she did not perform the official opening of the new £4 million student centre in UCC, or inaugurate the "All Together Now" programme for the Cutting Edge Youth Films group in the city.
No flights were cancelled or delayed at Cork Airport.
There were warnings to travellers to drive with care as there were fears that frees disturbed by the high winds of late last month could fall if the winds became stronger.
North Munster escaped the brunt of the storm. How ever, there was some flooding yesterday in the low-lying areas of Limerick city, along O'Callaghan and Clancy strands and on the main Tipperary road. There was also some flooding in the Clarecastle and Newmarket-on-Fergus areas, and some minor damage caused by the gale-force winds.
