You should only eat Dolmio once a week, says sauce maker

Mars Food to introduce ‘everyday’ and ‘occasional’ labelling for products

The company that makes Dolmio pasta sauces and Uncle Ben’s rice has advised consumers to use some of its products just once a week because of high sugar, salt or fat content.

Mars Food is to distinguish between “everyday” and “occasional” items on its labelling and on its website.

The company said about 5 per cent of its products will be labelled “occasional”, the BBC reported. These include Dolmio lasange sauces, pesto and carbonara and macaroni oven kits.

Mars said it will update its website in the coming months with a list of “occasional” products to be eaten no more than once a week, and “everyday” products reduced in salt, sugar or fat over the next five years.

The company said its “nutrition criteria” has been developed in consultation with leading public health authorities such as the World Health Organisation.

“We’re incredibly proud and excited to share our new five year health and wellbeing ambition,” said Mars global president Fiona Dawson.

“Mars Food will help consumers differentiate and choose between ‘everyday’ and ‘occasional’ options.

“To maintain the authentic nature of the recipe, some Mars Food products are higher in salt, added sugar or fat. As these products are not intended to be eaten daily, Mars Food will provide guidance to consumers on-pack and on its website regarding how often these meal offerings should be consumed within a balanced diet.”
