THE ESB has outlined some simple energy saving measures which could help customers save more than £30 million during the next year as part of Energy Awareness Week which starts today.
Savings could be achieved by fitting compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) light bulbs and by installing lagging jackets to insulate hot water tanks, according to the company.
Other measures include:
. For maximum efficiency, washing machines, tumble dryers and dishwashers should be used with a full load;
. Immersion heaters should not be left on when hot water is not needed. A timer should be used instead;
. Electric ovens should be used for batch baking to gain the best possible use of a hot oven;
. Toast should be made using a toaster rather than a cooker grill, which uses much more energy;
. Customers should install storage heaters as they use a reduced rate of electricity.
As part of the week's events, today has been designated Public Transport Day. The aim is to encourage Irish motorists to leave their cars at home and use public transport.
