Johannesburg - The diamond company De Beers gave its backing yesterday to a British proposal for the UN Security Council to impose a global embargo on diamond exports by rebels from wartorn Sierra Leone.

Meanwhile, rebels in Sierra Leone who have seized 21 Indian peacekeepers have moved them from their besieged post in eastern Sierra Leone, the UN said yesterday.
