Bogota - Colombia's largest rebel force freed a dying police colonel and three other officers in the first phase of a landmark prisoner swap with the government yesterday.

Col Alvaro Leon Acosta, suffering from pneumonia and needing surgery, was flown by helicopter to a hospital in the southern city of Cali after being handed over to the Red Cross in a mountainous region of southern Colombia.
