Collins speech fails to sell at London auction

Three items relating to the War of Independence failed to sell at an auction in London yesterday

Three items relating to the War of Independence failed to sell at an auction in London yesterday. The items included a carbon copy of Michael Collins's 1921 election address.

They went under the hammer at Sotheby's in Bond Street with a target price of between £8,000 and £10,000 sterling.

However, they were withdrawn from sale after failing to meet that price.

A spokesman for Sotheby's said that while there had been some interest in the items, the bidding had only gone as high as £5,500.

The three items were brought to Sotheby's by an Irish national who said he had bought them at a junk sale in the UK over 20 years ago.
