A smuggling tunnel being dug by Palestinians on the Gaza-Egypt border has collapsed leaving at least five people trapped inside, witnesses in the Gaza border town of Rafah said.

Israeli forces controlling the occupied area allowed Palestinian ambulances and rescue workers to get to the scene. It was not known if there were any dead in the tunnel.

Israeli restrictions have led the Palestinian population to depend on similar tunnels to smuggle goods into the occupied territories.
