Musicians and performers from Malawi, Benin, Uganda and South Africa will be among those hoping to "build long lasting links through the power of entertainment" in Dublin's first Afro Carnival, being launched tomorrow.

The free festival takes place over the August bank holiday weekend and promises "to introduce a collage of colour to the city streets from the growing influence of African culture in Ireland," according to festival director, Michelle McCrann

As well as a dance troupe from Benin, described as "very lively", saxophonist and guitarist, Popps Muhammad will be flying in from Johannesburg. "He is well accomplished, has played around the world in his 20 years of performances and has won many awards for his traditional music," said Ms McCrann.

Also playing will be Popp Dogg - a traditional Malawi performer based in Ireland, Sumu - a mix of Ugandan and Kenyan performers, and Sammie Okposo flying in from West Africa with his gospel band. The carnival takes place in Wolfe Tone Park next to the Jervis Street Centre, on August 5th and 6th, from noon to 5pm.
