A Co Down fisherman died yesterday after he fell from a harbour pier and landed on the boat he was working on in Britain.

Mickey O'Boyle from Kilclief, Co Down, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident at Whitehaven Harbour, Cumbria.

Mr O'Boyle (47) was part of a three-man crew who had docked at the harbour overnight on Saturday. It is understood he was walking back to the boat to spend the night when he lost his footing.

Cumbrian Police said there were no witnesses to the incident, which happened some time between midnight and 2.30am, when Mr O'Boyle was discovered by his skipper.

A spokesman for the force confirmed the death was not being treated as suspicious but will be the subject of an inquest by the coroner for North Cumbria.
