WASHINGTON - The private lawyer for President Clinton yesterday said he was reviewing a federal subpoena requiring the President to testify in a Whitewater criminal trial, and that Mr Clinton would cooperate.

"We have received . . . [the] order and we will review it carefully," said Mr David Kendall, the president's personal lawyer. "The President's intention is to cooperate, in an appropriate fashion."

Ms Susan McDougal, a former partner of the president and Mrs Hillary Rodham Clinton in their Whitewater land development deal, had requested the subpoena to counter allegations made by Mr David Hale, the key witness of the Whitewater special prosecutor, Mr Kenneth Starr.
