Rome - President Clinton and his wife, Hillary, are likely to visit Italy next March to lend their support to the mayor of Rome, Mr Francesco Rutelli, in his campaign to become prime minister, an Italian newspaper said yesterday.

Senator-elect Hillary Clinton has told New York Democrats and political colleagues, including a former ambassador to Italy, Mr Richard Gardner, that she would like to give her support to Mr Rutelli as he campaigns as leader of the centre-left in next year's general election, Il Foglio reported in Milan.

The election is expected in April next year.
