Armagh - President Clinton is sending his special envoy, Mr Dennis Ross, to the Middle East to intervene in the stalled peace negotiations, the White House announced yesterday. The Israeli Prime Minister, Mr Benjamin Netanyahu, and the Palestinian leader, Mr Yasser Arafat - whom the US president phoned during his visit to Moscow - requested Mr Clinton and the Secretary of State, Ms Madeleine Albright, to send the mediator, according to the White House statement, issued in Northern Ireland. Mr Ross will travel to the Middle East next week.
