President Clinton has been "deeply saddened" by the deaths of the three children in Ballymoney and repeated his call for "dialogue and reconciliation".

The statement released by the White House last night said: "The President was deeply saddened by the deaths of three innocent children in a sectarian attack . . . Extremists continue to try and drag Northern Ireland back into a cycle of violence.

"On behalf of all Americans, we extend our condolences to the family of the three boys, to the community where they lived and to all those affected by this tragedy. We hope their unnecessary deaths remind people of the costs of confrontation."

The Irish Northern Aid Committee called for demonstrations of support for the Garvaghy Road residents in the US.

Noraid added: "What is happening in Portadown is insane. The Orangemen have rioted for six nights now and threaten to continue without an end in sight. They have stated they are against the peace process that 86 per cent of the people of Ireland voted for, and will make every effort to destroy all the work that has been done to bring justice and equality to the Six Counties."
