Clashes erupted between gunmen and security forces in Baghdad today after Iraqi troops stepped up security in the capital in a bid to root out insurgents.
The shooting took place in the northern Adhamiya district, a Sunni insurgent stronghold and one of the capital's most dangerous areas.
There were no immediate reports of any casualties. Gunmen carrying AK-47 automatic rifles were blocking roads with large stones and tree trunks and ordering civilians to leave, a witness said.
People were seen fleeing the area and fierce shooting was heard, he added.
