British International Development Secretary Clare Short has resigned from the government, her office announced today.

She had expressed opposition to the war in Iraq and had earlier threatened to resign over the issue but had decided to stay on in office.

Ms Short said in her resignation letter to the Prime Minister: "I have decided that I must leave the Government".

She accused Mr Blair of breaching assurances he had given her on the role of the United Nations in governing post-conflict Iraq.

Ms Short claimed Mr Blair and Foreign Secretary Jack Straw had "secretly" negotiated a UN Security Council resolution that contradicted assurances she had given in the Commons to MPs.
