A plan for coastal protection works, justified as necessary to protect the €150 million Doonbeg golf resort from the effects of global warming, has been rejected by An Bord Pleanála.

The board refused planning permission for the large-scale works despite warnings from the Co Clare golf club that the viability of the overall project will be threatened if nothing is done to prevent further coastal erosion.

Yesterday the board ruled that the proposal was contrary to the proper planning and development of the area. It was not satisfied that the proposal would not adversely affect the integrity of the proposed Special Area of Conservation (pSAC) in the dune system.

"In deciding not to accept the inspector's recommendation, the board noted his comments in respect of the lack of clarity in the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) regarding the effect on the unprotected elements of the dune system, the need for a more considered analysis of the impact on those parts of the beach and for a broader examination of alternatives," it said.

Doonbeg golf club confirmed it will lodge a new application.
