CITY of London's anti terrorist security cordon is to be strengthened following the breakdown of the IRA cease fire, Scotland Yard confirmed" yesterday, writes Rachel Borrill.

Two more security check points are to be introduced the Broadgate area "which includes Liverpool Street frail station, and at Ludgate, Hill, to protect the Old Bailey and St Paul's Cathedral.

The £1 million proposals are expected to be implemented within weeks after planning,permission has been granted. The cordon would extend the area to cover 75 per cent of the City.

The British Prime Minister, Mr Major, authorised the £5 million measure in August 1993, following the IRA's Bishopsgate bomb which devastated the capital's financial centre.
