Smuggled cigarettes with a retail value of £3.3 million have been seized by Customs officers at Dublin port

Smuggled cigarettes with a retail value of £3.3 million have been seized by Customs officers at Dublin port. The cigarettes came into the port on Saturday in a freighter which had sailed from Antwerp in the Netherlands.

The container originated in South Africa and was destined for Northern Ireland, although officials believes the smugglers intended to distribute the cigarettes in Dublin.

The driver of the lorry carrying the container was questioned but later released.
