Cigarettes worth €1.4m seized in Rosslare

Customs officers have seized contraband cigarettes valued at €1.4 million in Rosslare port.

Customs officers have seized contraband cigarettes valued at €1.4 million in Rosslare port.

The 4.8 million "Palace"-brand cigarettes were found in a refrigerated truck trailer, hidden in a container behind packages of frozen chips.

The cigarettes originated in the Canaries, and the load was picked up in Malaga, Spain; they arrived in Rosslare by ferry from Cherbourg, France.

The consignment was due to be taken to an address in Ballinrobe, Co Mayo.

Two Northern Ireland residents accompanying the load were released after questioning, a statement from Revenue said. It added that the seizure was as a result of "risk profiling".
