Lisbon - Portugal gave way to China in a dispute over stationing troops in the enclave of Macau, on the first day of a state visit by China's President, Mr Jiang Zemin.

Within hours of Mr Jiang's arrival on the latest stage of his six-nation tour, foreign ministers from the two nations worked out a deal on one of the biggest disputes before the return of Macau to Chinese sovereignty on December 20th.
