Beijing - China sentenced 14 people to death yesterday for their roles in a multi-billion dollar smuggling scandal based around the southern port of Xiamen, the official Xinhua news agency said.
Five local courts in the southern province of Fujian sentenced 14 people to death but gave three a two-year reprieve, Xinhua said without giving names. Reprieved death sentences are usually commuted to life sentences in prison in China.
