Beijing - China fired fresh salvoes in its dispute with the Vatican over Catholic martyrs yesterday, telling the Holy See to "repent" past crimes against Chinese people.

"The Vatican should repent of the past crimes against the Chinese people committed by the missionaries, instead of allowing certain people in the Holy See to further tamper with history and fool the world under the guise of the term canonisation," said a joint statement by two government-controlled Christian groups.
