The National Children's Choir has been commissioned to record the national anthem on a CD which will be sent to every primary school in the State.

The rendition of Amhrán na bhFiann by the National Children's Choir will be conducted by Seán Creamer, founder of the choir.

A spokeswoman from the Department of Education said: "The National Children's Choir has been commissioned to record the national anthem, and the CD will be given to all primary schools."

She said she could not confirm when this would take place.

The decision to send a CD of the national anthem to every primary school was welcomed yesterday by Fianna Fáil deputy Martin Brady. He said it was a major step forward towards ensuring the compulsory teaching of Amhrán Na bhFiann.

"There is clearly a desire amongst Irish people and especially our young people to learn the anthem and its history."
