The negative image of technology and its impact on children must be rehabilitated, the charity Barnardos has said.

Though much focus has been on the menacing potential of information technology - for example, text bullying and internet safety - a new guide from the children's charity focuses on the benefits that can be gained from integrating computers and communications tools into a child's environment.

The guide, Children and Technology, a Tool for Child Development, published yesterday, says communications and information technology is an invaluable child development tool. It says it encourages story-telling and helps develop reading skills.

Broadcaster Pat Kenny said at the launch that there was an inevitability about technology in children's lives and it was important to harness it positively rather than try to "protect" children from it.

The guide is available from Barnardos, Christchurch Square, Dublin 8, or www.barnardos.ie
