New York - The man who killed John Lennon told the US board that denied him parole that he deserves to be in prison for his "despicable" crime, according to a transcript released yesterday.

Mark Chapman also said he nearly skipped the hearing after finally realising how much pain he caused Yoko Ono, Lennon's widow.

"I don't even deserve to be here," - meaning alive - while Lennon is dead, Chapman told the three-member panel on October 3rd.
