Havana - President Fidel Castro of Cuba spent part of his 74th birthday yesterday making a highly symbolic appearance at a patriotic ceremony in a new "anti-imperialist" square built opposite the US diplomatic mission in Havana.
Dr Castro presided at a tribute to the graduation of 4,000 medical students and a collective avowal of socialist faith. He did not allude to his birthday.
