RTÉ television has appointed Steve Carson as the State broadcaster’s new Directory of Programmes.
The Belfast-born programme maker, who is married to well-known RTE broadcaster, Miriam O’Callaghan, takes up the post next week.
He said he was “privileged to have the opportunity to lead our programme makers in continuing to deliver the full range of home-produced, high-quality material for our audience.”
Mr Carson formerly worked for the BBC in London, on flagship current affairs
programmes, including Newsnight and Panorama. After returning to Ireland, and working for a while with RTÉ, he set up the independent company Mint Productions, with his wife in 2000.
With offices in both Dublin and Belfast, it has grown to become one of Ireland’s most high profile production companies. The company has won awards from Celtic Media Festival, the Royal Television Society and ESB Media, and critical acclaim for a string of documentaries.
They included programmes about former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, his predecessor
Charlie Haughey and an Irish version of the family-tree tracing series, Who Do
You Think You Are?.
In his new role at the State broadcaster, he will have overall responsibility for RTE’s home-produced television programmes. He will also be a key member of the station’s management board.
